چکیده
of a dissertation at the University of Miami. The current study examined cognitive effects of unilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Neuropsychological evaluations were conducted at baseline and follow-up. Data was collected from 28 unilateral STN DBS patients (15 English-and 13 Spanish-speaking), and 15 English-speaking matched PD control patients. English-speaking DBS patients demonstrated significant declines in verbal fluency and attention/executive function, whereas PD control patients did not experience significant cognitive decline. Cognitive performance did not differ based on side of DBS. Spanish-speaking DBS patients experienced significant declines in verbal fluency, confrontational naming and visuospatial abilities. Among Spanish-speaking DBS patients, older age and later age of disease onset predicted verbal fluency decline, even after controlling for education.

Five-year follow-up of 23 asymmetrical Parkinson's disease patients treated with unilateral subthalamic nucleus stimulation★
In this study, 23 asymmetrical Parkinson's disease patients were treated with unilateral deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus and followed up for 5 years. At 5 years after stimulation treatment, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale II, III and axial symptom scores in the off-drug condition were significantly increased compared those at baseline. However, total Unified Parkinson...
متن کاملDopamine transporter changes after unilateral deep brain stimulation in progressive Parkinson’s disease: a case report
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) at the subthalamic nucleus has been approved as an effective treatment for refractory symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). Studies have shown that bilateral DBS surgery in PD patients results in clinical improvement without reducing dopamine transporter function. Here, we report our longitudinal findings in one PD patient, ie, decreases in striatal dopamine transpo...
متن کاملAnatomical situation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) from midcommissural point (MCP) in Parkinson\'s disease patients underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS): an MRI targeting study
Abstract Introduction: It is demonstrated that the degree of clinical improvement in Parkinson's disease (PD) achieved by deep brain stimulation (DBS) is largely dependent on the accuracy of lead placement. In addition, individual variability in the situation of subthalamic nucleus (STN) is responsible for spatial inter-individual fluctuations of the real patient's target. Objecti...
متن کاملA cost analysis of intraoperative microelectrode recording during subthalamic stimulation for Parkinson's disease.
Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus is the standard of care for treating medically intractable Parkinson's disease. Although the adjunct of microelectrode recording improves the targeting accuracy of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in comparison with image guidance alone, there has been no investigation of the financial cost of intraoperative microelectrode recording. T...
متن کاملUnilateral pedunculopontine stimulation improves falls in Parkinson's disease.
Postural instability and falls are a major source of disability in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. These problems are currently not well addressed by either pharmacotherapy nor by subthalamic nucleus deep-brain stimulation surgery. The neuroanatomical substrates of posture and gait are poorly understood but a number of important observations suggest a major role for the pedunculopon...
